From the Collection:
The S. M. Engle papers, SC-000143, contains the speeches given by Rev. S. M. Engle during his time at Hampden-Sydney College and after. The eight hand-written speeches or arguments address subjects such as Engle's inauguration to the Union Literary Society, religion, patriotism, utilitarianism, the position of the student in the nineteenth century, sensualistic philosophy, and the future of Roman Catholicism in the United States of America. Also included in the collection is correspondence between HSC archives and Engle’s descendants regarding the transfer of ownership for the collection. Not included in the collection are specifics to Engle’s classes or the Union Theological Seminary.
