Biographical History

Mathew Carey (January 28, 1760 – September 16, 1839) was an Irish-born American publisher and economist. He lived and worked in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He began his career in the bookselling and printing business in 1775 in Dublin, printing pamphlets that criticized dueling, the Irish penal code, the Irish Parliament, and the Protestant Ascendancy until he was forced to flee Ireland and land in Paris, France as a political refugee where he attracted the attention of Benjamin Franklin. Eventually, he made his way to America and used money that Benjamin Franklin gave him to set up a new publishing business and a bookshop. He founded The Pennsylvania Herald (1785), Columbian Magazine (1786), and The American Museum. Upon arriving in America, Carey quickly developed political connections and one of his most important supporters was John Adams. He supported the development and maintenance of American naval strength, was an advocate for tariffs, and defended economic protectionism.
